At the University of Missouri, we’re working to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 for the health and safety of our Tiger community — and to create an environment that will allow us to continue to enjoy in-person experiences. Part of that effort is creating a culture of awareness by requiring faculty, staff and students to monitor their health daily. The practice is also recommended for visitors. Now, self-monitoring is made easier with #CampusClear.

Monitor your symptoms with #CampusClear

The university is adopting the use of #CampusClear, a self-screening mobile application designed to support campus community members as they monitor their day-to-day health and respond to potential COVID-19 symptoms. #CampusClear provides a daily push notification and self-monitoring only takes a few seconds. The app will also act as a pass to provide students, faculty and staff access to designated locations in the future.

To sign up:

  1. Access the app on the App Store, Google Play or via the web.
  2. Indicate if you are a student, an employee or a visitor. Faculty, staff and students should use their university email address to automatically register with the university. No other contact information is needed.
  3. Visitors will be asked to select the school they wish to visit and may provide either their phone number or personal email address to sign in.
  4. Users will be asked to finish authentication via the email they provided for registration.

How it works

Users will receive a daily prompt to complete their self-screening. Screening only takes a few seconds as users review symptoms or situations of potential exposure and select any that may apply. Those who select one or more symptoms will not be “cleared for campus” access, so users should be sure to select only symptoms that are new, unusual or unexplained rather than those associated with health conditions they regularly experience.

If a user is not cleared for campus access, the app also directs them to available support resources if they are directed to stay home, seek guidance from a health care provider and/or monitor their symptoms.

#CampusClear is designed to be an educational tool. Any information a user provides is meant to result in personal guidance and support. The app is not a diagnostic tool and using it does not establish a treatment relationship with a health care provider or with the Student Health Center.

Is my information private?

The app does not collect data such as names, personal identification numbers, addresses or telephone numbers. Participants supply an e-mail address when they create an account, but no identifying information is collected by the university. Only aggregate data will be provided to authorized university administrators to provide real-time insights into overall health trends.

Yes. Each member of our campus community is responsible for following health and safety processes established by the university and outlined in the Show Me Renewal plan. One precaution that all faculty, staff and students must complete is monitoring their own health on a daily basis. Visitors are also encouraged to complete self-screening.

#CampusClear is a self-screening app that will make the process easier by prompting users to click on any possible COVID-19 symptoms and by providing guidance for next steps depending on the information the user has given.

After completing the self-screening and receiving an indication that they are permitted to visit campus, users can use the app as a pass to access designated campus locations.

Those without access to the appropriate technology to download, or for other reasons, have the option to verbally confirm their symptom self-check and some locations or divisions may provide temperature-taking options.

#CampusClear is available as a web application and can be completed on any device with internet access. The app works as an educational tool and mitigates our risk as a campus — but just because someone is cleared for campus by the app doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t have COVID-19.  Remember, some carriers can be asymptomatic, or the user may not have been displaying enough symptoms to prompt further inquiry by a health care professional. As we work and learn together, we must act as if anyone — including ourselves — could be an asymptomatic carrier. That means adhering to university guidance regarding social distancing, face coverings and other mitigation measures at all times.

Participation is based on honesty. Even if someone provides accurate and truthful information, though, a “cleared for campus” screen doesn’t necessarily mean an individual doesn’t have COVID-19. Remember — carriers can be asymptomatic. Instead, a “cleared for campus” screen simply means that at the time an individual answered the questions, he or she was not displaying enough symptoms to prompt further inquiry by a health care professional.

Either the app or verbal screening are required and may be requested by university representatives. Individuals who do not complete and verify self-monitoring with the #CampusClear app may also be denied entrance into designated locations in the future.

Yes! Social distancing and face covering guidelines must always be followed, since symptom tracking and #CampusClear are just one precaution of many that work together to help us protect our fellow students, our staff and faculty — and our in-person experience.

The university has adopted the use of #CampusClear to support students, faculty, staff and visitors as they monitor potential symptoms of COVID-19 and help maintain learning and working environments that are as safe and productive as possible. #CampusClear provides additional peace of mind when used as a pass, since research suggests that daily self-screening combined with a check-in strategy have dramatically reduced the spread of COVID-19 in a hospital setting.

In addition, #CampusClear can help keep our university community and our on-campus locations safer by providing real-time, aggregate reports and high-level data that can help support decisions about adjustments to on-campus policies and procedures.

University representatives and supervisors may request to see the app screen or verbally confirm a self-check has been completed. In the future, students, faculty and staff will need to share their “cleared for campus” screen to gain access to locations on campus.

Instructors have the option of checking their students’ #CampusClear app to ensure compliance. If you choose to screen students, you should be prepared to screen students verbally if they cannot use the app due to lack of technology or other reasons.

If faculty, staff, students or visitors are not using the #CampusClear app, check to see if they are knowledgeable of campus guidelines relating to COVID-19—and that they know about and have access to the #CampusClear app. If someone does not have the app, they can be asked to verbally verify that they have checked their symptoms and temperature.
